I finally finished the outline for my breakout session at the Dynamic Church Conference in Dallas which is now just a little over 3 weeks away. In another week, I'll give it some final updating. My session is Ten New Media Values Impacting Ministry.
Because digital media operate differently than traditional media, they change what we value. For example, the first characteristic I've listed in my outline is Interactivity. We now value that which we can actively participate in, that which we can interact with.
I wonder if you can identify some of the other values that digital media embody? What would be on your list?

First, we’re a Fellowship One subscriber - wish we were able to attend this year’s conference. Will your/other workshops be available for purchase/audio download?
Regarding values of digital media, not sure if this applies but 24/7 access and the ability to easily share with others are things I certainly value.
Kirby - you got it - instant accessibility is on the list.
And so is the concept of shareability. Whether video sharing (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.), photo sharing (istockphoto, flickr, etc.), file sharing, or whatever… We value what we can pass on to others in a viral way if we so choose.
Cynthia,
Looking forward to the conference. Thanks for your insight regarding it.
Derek Webb has some interesting comments on shareability and viral marketing. He and some others launched a website http://www.noisetrade.com Last time I checked it was not fully what they intend it to be, there is a wonderful interview with derek there.
He talks about the Long Tail http://www.thelongtail.com/
This interview is one of the elements that really set me on my New Media adventure which I’ve been blogging about.
You know what I’m going to say don’t you?
Collaboration, which is also interactivity. But I think people want to work together on teams with people. That time also includes brainstorming, having fun, goofing…creating space for innovation.
rhett
ps see you Friday
Ryan - glad you can make the conference.
Rhett - I knew you were going to bring Wikinomics into our discussion. And yes, I have collaboration in a subcategory under participatory interactivity.
Adaptability. If you have a little coding skill, you can make a wordpress template adapt to almost anything you need it to do.
I know this is a few days old, but just tonight I added probably 20 feeds to my feed reader. This leads me to believe that one value is Personal Delivery. I don’t want to go to my 50 blog sites every day. In fact, any blog I’ve ever followed has proved to be a pain. I never check my church website because the updates are rare and hard to find.
Send your updates straight to me and I’ll pay attention. Make me go get it and I likely won’t. Maybe I’m lazy, maybe that’s the trend of the day.
Ryan - you are describing the difference between pushed & pulled media. RSS is considered pulled. You can read about the differences in many places online.
Also, don’t give up on web sites yet. They’re uninteresting as info. silos but will liven up considerably as social media attributes get added in including personal profiles, streamed video content and more participatory interactive elements.
