Great post! I love the idea of having a Bacn folder. I get so many newsletters and currently have a folder for each one. Personally I have thought about not even keeping my email in Outlook (although I prefer to read it there) since everything comes to my gmail account which is so easy to search.

For the large churches I’ve been at and am at (Saddleback Church and LifeChurch.tv) they both use Exchange for email, and used delegation features to have one or two other staff help to manage and filter the emails that the senior pastor receives. They also usually have a non-obvious email address for their personal internal use that only the right people have.

Mike – since I’m not an expert let’s leave your comment open for someone else to address. Most Senior Pastors use the kind of filtering you’ve described (same way their phone number isn’t on the church site!) but not always “central office” usually personal assistant. I’ll try to remember to ping some of my friends & see if some specialists jump in.
Steven – 30 seconds, then: today, this week or follow up + archive or delete is perfect. And my RSS feeds (over 1000) need this attention too. Often tempted to shave back but the answer is organization…..

Great post! For me, it’s a 30 second response, or it gets filed in one of three folders: Today, This Week, or Follow Up. Anything else is archived or deleted.

I’m working this technique into RSS feeds as well, less time committed, better information ingested and more comments left.

Great post. The current setup at our church is that our pastor’s email is not posted on our church site. Instead, when you click on his email info, it goes to a central email address for the office staff to review (a disclaimer on the page states this in the case of confidential emails).

This was intended to reduce the amount of spam going to his inbox. I clearly do not like the setup.

Any thoughts on this? How do large churches handle the same issue? Direct email to the pastor or do they have a staff member filter the email?

Cynthia, I have a heart for those who haven't found the system for dealing with email efficiently because I was there once. I summarized my biggest tips in this post on my blog. Figured others might enjoy the tips I gave my readers.
