Your completely right about how so many businesses now or corporate identities are more charity minded. I know so many dentists that will take off for months at a time and head over seas to do free dental work. It isn't just churches anymore doing so much of the charitable work. However, the best part about churches doing work is that they are actively helping people but also trying to convert them to Christ. Many businesses just do it for the write off or because they honestly want to help people but when you are doing good and leading people to Christ, you get two birds with one stone!

Cynthia. I agree with most of what you are saying, but I am puzzled by a few comments and would appreciate clarification on two points. Firstly, what do you mean by the phrase “eradicating stupid poverty”? When read in the context of the whole paragraph in which that phrase appears, you seem to be expressing a view that some Christian young people are misguided in their efforts to address the needs of the marginalised; and/or such an approach is not a valid Christian response. Is that your view, or have I misunderstood what you are trying to say?

Secondly, I am having difficulty reconciling other comments you have made under the heading "Blurred lines between profit and non-profit" with the exhortation in James 2:16 to put faith into action when it comes to people's physical needs. Likewise, your comments seem to be at odds with the many references in both testaments about God's heart for the poor and the marginalised. I agree with you when you say that some secular rock stars have taken up various social causes; and I suggest it would be naive to think that some Christians have not influenced by those people. However, there are also many church leaders (from many denominations, including evangelicals and pentecostals)who are speaking out on those same issues - and exhorting the church into action. Are you suggesting that the church should not respond to issues such as slavery and third world poverty in practical ways?

Cynthia,

You are definitely right about using social media and the internet to reach people. Though you can not underestimate the effectiveness of having a great church website. This can easily eclipse the effectiveness of social media when you get your church members to actively use it. It also adds a great face to your church for new members!

Thanks
Nathan

Cynthia,

Good thoughts. Now what? From my limited vantage point I see agreement with these trends by many in the church, but very little movement toward adjusting to deal with them. More and more next generation folks seems to be walking out on some of the organizations (denominations) in favor of non-specific organizational structures that embrace these trends. The orgs seem to offer great lip service to these trends but very little action and those that want/need action are moving on. Not necessarily bad for the global church but some great orgs are getting gray and irrelevant.

Love to hear your thoughts.
