The ultimate research resource for studying online trends including Internet diffusion and penetration, etc. is the Pew Internet & American Life Project.
Although Pew has been covered extensively here (Lee Rainie Interview), their newest report is worth noting. It concludes that 34% of Internet users have logged onto the Internet using a wireless connection either around the house, at their workplace, or someplace else. The report profiles these wireless users and describes their intensive use of the Internet, especially in exchanging emails and getting news online. One third of all Internet users is a significant number.
Wireless and mobile technologies will add entirely new dimensions of functionality to currently existing technologies as well as pave the way for yet undeveloped media-based communications. Innovative institutions offer wireless coverage more and more frequently. Here's a link, for example, that maps Stanford University's current wifi hotspots. If you want to immerse yourself even more deeply into the study of the social implications of ubiquitous wireless on all institutions, you can go to this wiki link at the m/cyclopedia of new media.
I know what you're saying, who reads this stuff? Well, the Church is a social institution, isn't it? If you're inspired by data you can also download the full Pew report here.
