Acadiana affected by global social media blackout

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp users are back online after a major global outage on Monday that lasted around seven hours.

Some of us may have enjoyed the break, but in this “age of social media,” the blackout has had a big impact.

Nowadays, Facebook and other platforms are not only key means of communication, they are also important for doing business.

“When you can’t post or you can’t be social, with your followers, it’s a bit difficult.”

For social media influencer Rhett LeCompte better known as “DJ Rhett,” his biggest audience is on Facebook.

In addition to his comedy, he uses his platform to help those recovering from Hurricane Ida gain information.

“Not having that ability to talk to fans is a little scary and I’m always checking on what’s going on and it’s just weird,” LeCompte added.

This same sense of unease has been felt by small businesses, like Jet Coffee, where they use Instagram and Facebook as a key medium to communicate with their customers.

“Every morning or afternoon, all day long, she checks it. So today she was lucky enough to get all of our messages as much as she could, respond, and then it went down. thinks people kind of understand knowing we can’t answer, we can’t answer it, but as soon as it comes back, we’ll be there, ”said Jet Coffee owner John Tommasini.

Outside of business, the shutdown made it difficult for some to simply communicate with their families.

Like Fay Zalmudurra, a student at UL, whose family lives in Pakistan.

“It’s the only way for me to communicate with my brothers, my mom, so when it was down, I also couldn’t communicate with them using WhatsApp or Instagram,” Zalmudarra said.

It is not known what caused the outage.
