The Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has reminded drivers that authorities can request your documentation at any time, saying the new mobile app should make this easier. Failure to provide these mandatory documents could result in a fine of up to 500 euros.

DGT works hard to reduce the death toll on Spanish roads and one of the ways to do this is to ensure that all drivers and cars on the road are legal and roadworthy. This means that at any time you can be stopped and asked for any of the following original documents, but you can now also store them securely on the DGT app, available on Google Playstore or the App Store of Apple.

The documents you must keep in your vehicle at all times are:

Driver’s license

Carrying a minimum fine of 10 euros for not being able to produce a driving license, fines can go up to 80 euros if any of the data is incorrect, 200 euros if the driving license is expired and 500 euros if your license has been revoked, canceled or suspended.

Technical check sheet

The technical control card (ITV control form) carries a minimum of 10 euros if you cannot produce it, and if it is expired, the fine will amount to 200 euros.

Traffic license / car license

The third of the mandatory documents is the license that allows the vehicle to be used on the road. Failure to carry it will result in a minimum fine of 10 euros, but as with other documents if the vehicle is driven without the correct license the fine will be 500 euros.

The DGT app

The new application allows you to download all your documents on your mobile along with the driving license and the car papers are also valid if presented in this digital format. You can do this with the DGT app, which is also used to check your points, change your address, request a vehicle report and pay fines, among other things.

According to the DGT, officers have been tasked with checking documents and issuing fines when they cannot be produced, are incorrect or expired. The best option is to download the mobile app, to ensure that the documents are with you at all times.
