EVANSTON, Ill. — The University of Notre Dame fencing team continued their season at the Northwestern Duals by beating Boston College (21-6, 18-9), UC San Diego (18-9, 23-4) , Incarnate Word (25-2 & 23-4), Stanford (19-8 & 19-8), Northwestern (25-2), Lawrence (22-5) and Temple (19-8). The women’s team ultimately fell to Cornell 12-15. The men’s team goes to 38-0 and the women’s team goes to 42-3.
In the opener against Boston College, the Irish prevailed 21-6 and the women prevailed 18-9. In Boston College games, there have been seven perfect fights with 3-0 wins from Hunter Candreva, Harrison Kimatian, Andrew Machovec, Marcello Olivares, Luke Linder, Amanda Pirkowski and Jane Caulfield. Both the men’s and women’s teams dominated against UC San Diego. The men beat the Tritons 18-9 and the women beat them 23-4. The team saw five perfect 3-0 fights with wins from Mayah Walker, Jane Caulfield, Victoria Tontcheva, Amanda Pirkowski and Marcello Olivares.
The team also dominated against Incarnate Word when they won 25-2 and 23-4. William Chen, Marcello Olivares, Gustavo Rosselló, Will Attig, Malcolm Fields, Guram Lortkinpanidze, Amanda Pirkowski, Jane Caulfield, Mayah Walker and Solene Watson all won perfect 3-0 fights. The Irish beat Stanford 19-8 in both men’s and women’s.
The men’s team beat Northwestern 25-2 with three perfect 3-0 victories in epee, two in foil and two in sabre. They also faced Lawrence and won 22-5.
The women’s team battled Temple and Cornell winning 19-8, but falling to Cornell 12-15. In the Temple match, there were four perfect fights with wins from Victoria Tontcheva, Solene Watson, Daria Kudriavtseva and Sienna Wilson.
Seniors Marcello Olivares and Gustavo Rosselló led the team with 17 and 14 wins on the day. On the women’s side, Amanda Pirkowski led the team with 15 wins.
The Irish will be back on February 18, when they travel to the USA Fencing Junior Olympics.
