STATEN ISLAND, NY – The Westerleigh Folk Festival, which draws hundreds of people each year to Westerleigh Park, has been canceled this year due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. This would have been the 13th annual event of the festival.
“It really saddens us to have to cancel WestFest,” wrote founder Jim Indelicato in a statement Tuesday. “We look forward to doing it every year. He has grown and improved every time. However, the safety of our artists and our audience should always be our number one concern. “
The decision to cancel this year’s festivities was made on recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as state and city health departments.
Next year’s one-day festival is tentatively scheduled to take place on September 18, 2021.
The festival is known to provide a space for various musicians, artists and creators to perform each year. Those who attended the event can remember Julia gargano performing there before “American Idol” as well as The Kennedys, Flor De Toloache, Joan Caddell & The Midnight Choir and Karlus Trapp.
The free event also features kid-friendly activities, including face painting, yoga, and pony rides.
